Pseudancistrus sp. (L011)
Also known as: Leopard Cactus Pleco, L011 Pleco, Cactus Catfish L011
Origin: Rio Orinoco, Venezuela
The Leopard Cactus Pleco (L011) is a thorny-skinned loricariid from the Orinoco drainage of Venezuela and Colombia. Its body is densely covered in small, sharp odontodes giving it a cactus-like texture, overlaid with a beautiful leopard-spot pattern of dark spots on a lighter tan or brown background.
This species requires high water flow and excellent oxygenation in the aquarium. It naturally inhabits fast-moving rocky rivers and will stress in stagnant or oxygen-poor conditions. Provide multiple caves and crevices using smooth rocks and driftwood, and maintain strong filtration with power heads to simulate the natural environment.
L011 is an omnivore that accepts a wide variety of foods including algae wafers, blanched vegetables, frozen foods, and sinking carnivore pellets. It is generally peaceful with most tankmates but can be territorial with conspecifics; keep only one per tank unless the setup is very large.
Water: pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 25–29°C, GH 2–15, KH 1–8; high flow and oxygenation essential. Tank: 150 L minimum; rocky decor with caves, powerheads for current simulation. Feeding: Omnivore; algae wafers, spirulina, blanched vegetables, frozen bloodworm, sinking pellets. Breeding: Cave spawner; rarely achieved in home aquaria; requires high-flow breeding setup. Compatibility: Peaceful with most fish; territorial with conspecifics — one per tank recommended.
