Danio rerio var. (spotted)
Also known as: Leopard Danio
Origin: South Asia (captive-bred)
The Leopard Danio was once considered a separate species but is now understood to be a spotted morph of Danio rerio, arising from a mutation affecting horizontal stripe formation. Instead of continuous stripes, pigment is distributed in discrete spots across the flanks. It interbreeds freely with Zebra Danios and shares identical care requirements, hardiness, and active schooling behaviour.
Water: 18–26°C, pH 6.5–7.5, wide hardness tolerance (GH 5–20). Tank: 60 L minimum; wide tank for horizontal swimming; tolerates most setups. Feeding: Omnivore; flake, micro-pellets, frozen and live foods. Behaviour: Peaceful active schooler; keep in groups of 8+; can be mixed with Zebra Danios. Compatibility: Excellent community fish; compatible with virtually all peaceful species.
