Symphysodon discus var.
Also known as: Leopard Discus, Spotted Discus
Origin: South America (Amazon, Brazil)
The Leopard Discus is a visually dramatic captive-bred colour morph that stands out among discus varieties for its unique, irregularly spotted patterning. The base coloration — which may range from warm golden or orange to turquoise — is overlaid with dark brown or black spots and blotches of varying sizes, creating a pattern reminiscent of a big cat's coat. The degree and arrangement of spotting varies between individuals and breeding lines, making each fish subtly unique.
This variety was developed through selective breeding of Symphysodon discus stock, combining traits from several colour lineages to produce the distinctive spotted pattern. Like all discus, the Leopard originates from the warm blackwater rivers of the Amazon basin, and its ancestors evolved in environments characterised by extreme softness, acidity, high temperatures, and low light levels beneath a dense forest canopy.
In the aquarium, the Leopard Discus is as demanding as any other discus variety. It requires pristine, warm, soft-acid water, a spacious and well-decorated tank, and a varied, protein-rich diet to maintain its condition and colour. Its striking patterning makes it particularly photogenic and it often becomes the focal point of any aquarium it inhabits. Peaceful and sociable, it is best kept in groups with other discus or calm warm-water companions.
Tank Setup
Minimum 200 litres, with tall aquariums preferred. Dark substrate, driftwood, and large-leafed plants provide the ideal habitat. The spotted pattern of the Leopard Discus is shown to best advantage against a dark, natural background. Use gentle, efficient filtration and maintain low flow rates. Bare-bottom tanks are practical for breeders.
Water Parameters
Temperature 28–32 °C, pH 5.5–7.0, GH 1–8, KH 0–3. RO water with soft mineral supplementation is recommended. Perform 30–50% water changes two to three times weekly. Nitrates must remain below 10 ppm.
Feeding
Offer discus granules, beef heart mix, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. A varied diet supports both the immune system and the vibrancy of the spotted pattern. Feed small portions two to three times daily and remove uneaten food promptly.
Tank Mates
Cardinal tetras, rummy-nose tetras, small corydoras, and peaceful plecos are compatible. All companions must tolerate high temperatures. Avoid nippy or boisterous species.
Behaviour
Leopard Discus are peaceful and sociable. Their spotted pattern intensifies with good health and optimal conditions, and fades or becomes dull under stress or poor water quality. Groups display subtle social hierarchies with minimal conflict.
Health
Susceptible to hole-in-the-head, internal parasites, and bacterial infections. Impeccable water quality and a complete diet are the cornerstones of disease prevention. Quarantine all new introductions for at least four weeks.
