Synodontis leopardinus
Also known as: Leopard-print Synodontis, Leopardinus Squeaker
Origin: Upper Congo basin
Synodontis leopardinus is a handsomely patterned species from upper Congo tributaries, bearing a dense, high-contrast pattern of rounded dark spots on a pale cream-to-white background that closely mimics a leopard's coat and remains bold throughout the animal's life. It is a medium-large, well-proportioned catfish with a sturdy build.
In the aquarium it is moderately active and more visible during the day than many Synodontis, particularly in tanks with adequate hiding structures that provide security without encouraging permanent seclusion. It accepts a wide range of sinking foods readily and adapts well to standard soft to moderately hard water conditions.
An attractive and reliable species for dedicated African catfish setups or large Congo-theme community aquariums.
Water: 22–26°C, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard (GH 5–14, KH 2–9). Tank: 220 L minimum; rock caves and driftwood; sandy substrate; moderate current. Feeding: Sinking pellets, wafers, frozen prawn and bloodworm; robust and unfussy feeder. Breeding: Cave spawner; not routinely documented in captivity. Compatibility: Peaceful with medium to large community fish; suitable companion for large Congo-region species.
