Symphysodon aequifasciatus var.
Also known as: Leopard Snakeskin Discus, Leopard Discus
Origin: Captive bred (originally Southeast Asian hatcheries)
The Leopard Snakeskin Discus is the result of crossing snakeskin-patterned strains with leopard-spot lines, producing a fish with two overlapping pattern types that create extraordinary visual complexity. No two individuals are identical — the interplay of spots and reticulation varies from fish to fish.
This strain shares the same demanding husbandry requirements as all discus. Warm, soft, acidic water and a pristine environment are essential. The complex patterning benefits from strong, indirect lighting that highlights both the snakeskin reticulation and the leopard spotting simultaneously.
Keepers appreciate this strain for its uniqueness in a group setting — a shoal of six will display six visibly different but harmonious pattern expressions, making it one of the most visually dynamic discus varieties available.
Water: 28-31°C, pH 5.5-7.0, soft (1-8 dGH), KH 0-4; regular water changes to prevent nitrate build-up. Tank: Minimum 250 L tall, driftwood and leaf litter for natural feel, moderate indirect lighting. Feeding: Quality discus pellets, frozen bloodworm, beefheart, artemia; variety key for pattern development. Breeding: Open spawner; will breed readily in a well-conditioned pair tank at stable 30°C. Compatibility: Peaceful; keep with other discus strains, cardinal tetras, and small Corydoras.
