Pterophyllum leopoldi
Also known as: Leopold's Angelfish, Teardrop Angelfish
Origin: South America
Pterophyllum leopoldi is the smallest and most seldom-seen wild angelfish species. Its distinctive features include an occipital notch on the forehead, a pre-dorsal spot, and a compact but elegant body shape. Native to the Amazon and Essequibo river systems, it requires soft acidic water and careful handling.
Water: 25-30°C, pH 5.5-7.0, soft to slightly hard water. Tank: Minimum 120L tall aquarium, planted with fine-leaved plants and driftwood. Feeding: Small live and frozen foods preferred — bloodworm, daphnia, quality micro pellets. Behaviour: Semi-aggressive when spawning; more retiring than other angelfish species. Compatibility: Best with small peaceful South American species; avoid large or aggressive fish.
