Lepidarchus adonis
Also known as: Adonis Tetra, Adonis Characin
Origin: Ghana, West Africa
Lepidarchus adonis, the Adonis Tetra, is among the most visually striking micro-fish available for the freshwater nano aquarium. Discovered in the blackwater forest streams of Ghana, this diminutive species features an almost transparent body overlaid with vivid patterns of red, white, and black that appear almost jewel-like under quality lighting.
Maintaining Lepidarchus adonis correctly requires attention to water chemistry. Soft, acidic blackwater conditions are non-negotiable for long-term health and optimal colouration; hard, alkaline tap water causes rapid deterioration in both health and colour. RO or very soft source water conditioned with leaf litter or peat is strongly recommended.
Despite its delicate appearance, the Adonis Tetra is bold and active when its needs are met. It should be kept in groups of ten or more, as solitary or small groups show stress and hiding behaviour. Micro-foods dominate the diet — baby brine shrimp, micro-worm, and high-quality nano pellets are ideal.
Water: Very soft and acidic, pH 5.5–7.0, temperature 22–26°C, GH 0–6, KH 0–3. Tank: Minimum 30 L blackwater nano setup with leaf litter, dim lighting, and gentle flow. Feeding: Omnivore; baby brine shrimp, micro-worm, infusoria, and high-quality nano pellets. Breeding: Egg scatterer; very soft acidic water essential; fry are tiny and require infusoria as first food. Compatibility: Peaceful nano fish; best with other small West African micro-fish or kept as a species tank.
