Moenkhausia lepidura
Also known as: Lepidura Tetra, Lepidura Moenkhausia
Origin: Amazon and Orinoco drainages
Moenkhausia lepidura is a streamlined, torpedo-shaped tetra widely distributed across the Amazon and Orinoco drainages. Its silver body bears faint scale outlining and a small caudal blotch at the base of the tail. An active, high-energy schooling species, it occupies the mid-water column and drives other timid fish into the open through its confident, constant movement. It is among the most adaptable Moenkhausia species, tolerating a broad range of water parameters without significant loss of vitality. Excellent for large community and biotope aquariums where active schooling fish are desired. A sturdy, undemanding species suitable for beginners.
Water: pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 23–28 °C; soft to moderately hard. Very adaptable. Tank: 80 L minimum; open swimming areas with peripheral plant cover. Adequate filtration for active fish. Feeding: Omnivore; eagerly accepts flake, pellets, frozen bloodworm, daphnia, and brine shrimp. Breeding: Egg-scatterer; neutral soft water. Prolific when conditioned. Compatibility: Peaceful; suitable with a wide range of community fish.
