Leporinus fasciatus
Origin: Amazon and Orinoco basins, South America
Leporinus fasciatus, the Banded Leporinus, is a large, active characin from South American river systems. Its torpedo-shaped body is boldly striped with alternating black and yellow horizontal bands — the number increasing with age. A fast swimmer and a plant destroyer; ideal for large, heavily decorated aquascapes rather than planted tanks. Hardy and resilient. Peaceful with similarly-sized robust fish; may nip at the fins of slower species. Popular in large display tanks alongside pacu, silver dollars, and large tetras.
Large tank 200+ L. Strong filtration. Temperature 24–28 °C. Feed plant-based foods: spirulina flakes, blanched vegetables, along with sinking pellets and meaty foods. Will consume most live plants — use only robust, unpalatable plants (Java fern, Anubias) or no plants at all.
