Lethrinops albus
Also known as: White Lethrinops, Albus Sand Cichlid
Origin: Lake Malawi
Lethrinops albus is one of the paler members of its genus, with both males and females exhibiting a white-silver base color that in dominant males takes on a subtle blue-silver iridescence with faint horizontal banding. This unassuming but elegant cichlid is a dedicated sand-sifter, plowing through the substrate with its head in constant search of buried invertebrates and microorganisms.
This species is well-suited to a large sand-dominated Malawi biotope aquarium alongside other peaceful sand-dwelling species such as other Lethrinops, Aulonocara Peacocks, and Tramitichromis. The constant foraging behavior adds natural activity and interest to the aquarium while the fish remain generally peaceful and non-threatening to tankmates of similar size.
A maternal mouthbrooder that breeds readily in well-maintained aquaria. Males establish loose territories over the sandy floor and perform vibrant color displays to attract females. One of the more accessible Lethrinops for beginner-level Malawi Hap keepers.
Water: pH 7.6–8.8, 24–28°C, GH 10–20, KH 10–18; stable alkaline water; moderate filtration with low to medium flow. Tank: 250 L minimum with fine sand substrate at least 7 cm deep; open sandy floor for sifting behavior; minimal rocks. Feeding: Omnivore pellets, frozen mysis, live blackworm buried in sand; feed twice daily. Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder; spawns readily; females hold ~3 weeks; fry easy to raise on baby brine shrimp. Compatibility: Excellent with other Lethrinops, Aulonocara, Tramitichromis; avoid mbuna and large predatory Haps.
