Lethrinops gossei
Also known as: Gosse's Lethrinops, Gossei Sand Cichlid
Origin: Lake Malawi
Lethrinops gossei is a graceful sand-sifting cichlid that inhabits the extensive sandy shallows of Lake Malawi. Males in full breeding color develop an attractive metallic blue-green sheen across the flanks with warm yellow-orange accents on the pelvic and anal fins, creating a pleasing color combination well-suited to a brightly lit aquarium with a white sand substrate.
This species forages in a characteristic head-down posture, scooping mouthfuls of sand and sifting out edible particles. It is a peaceful species that adds natural foraging behavior to the aquarium without presenting a threat to similarly sized tankmates. Its gentle temperament makes it one of the better Lethrinops for mixed-gender species communities.
Breeds readily as a maternal mouthbrooder. Females are silver-grey and inconspicuous. Males display to each other in brief sparring displays that rarely result in injury. An accessible and rewarding species for keepers new to sand-dwelling Malawi cichlids.
Water: pH 7.6–8.8, 24–28°C, GH 10–20, KH 10–18; moderate filtration and regular partial water changes. Tank: 250 L minimum; deep fine sand substrate; open floor plan; avoid strong substrate-directed flow that disturbs foraging. Feeding: Omnivore sinking pellets, frozen mysis, live brine shrimp; feed twice daily. Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder; females hold 3 weeks; easy to breed; separate female to protect brood. Compatibility: Excellent community fish with Aulonocara, other Lethrinops, Copadichromis, and Tramitichromis.
