Lethrinops lethrinus
Also known as: Lethrinus Sand Cichlid, Type Lethrinops
Origin: Lake Malawi
Lethrinops lethrinus holds the distinction of being one of the first described members of its genus, lending its name to the group. A medium-sized sand-sifting cichlid found widely across Lake Malawi's sandy habitats, this species is representative of the classic Lethrinops body plan: deep-bodied relative to total length, with a moderate-length head and a gently pointed snout suited for sifting substrate.
Males in breeding condition develop a clean blue-green iridescence across the flanks with subtle yellow highlighting on the anal and dorsal fins. The colors are understated but attractive and show well under proper aquarium lighting. Females are silver-grey and blend well with the sandy substrate.
An easy species to maintain and breed, making it one of the better starter Lethrinops for keepers new to sand-sifting Malawi cichlids. A reliable maternal mouthbrooder that produces consistent broods in well-maintained aquaria.
Water: pH 7.6–8.8, 24–28°C, GH 10–20, KH 10–18; stable alkaline conditions with moderate filtration. Tank: 250 L minimum; fine sand substrate; spacious floor plan for territorial displays and sifting. Feeding: Omnivore pellets, frozen mysis, live blackworm; feed twice daily. Breeding: Easy maternal mouthbrooder; females hold ~3 weeks; separate females if males are aggressive post-spawn. Compatibility: Good community fish with sand-dwelling Peacocks, other Lethrinops, and Copadichromis.
