Corydoras leucomelas
Also known as: Leucomelas Cory, Half-black Cory, False Peppered Cory
Origin: Peru, Colombia (upper Amazon and Ucayali basin)
Corydoras leucomelas is a moderately large cory from Peru and Colombia, characterised by a large, intensely black dorsal patch and prominent spotting on the flanks. The contrast between the black dorsal saddle, the spotted sides, and the pale belly creates a striking tricolour effect that makes this species visually appealing despite its relatively common pattern type.
It is a widespread species found across the upper Amazon and Ucayali basins but is strangely underrepresented in the aquarium trade despite its attractive appearance and robust constitution. When available, it is usually imported as a by-catch of other Peruvian or Colombian shipments rather than being specifically targeted.
C. leucomelas is one of the easier cories to keep — it is hardy, adaptable, tolerant of a range of water conditions, and accepts all standard sinking foods without difficulty. Keep in groups of six or more with a fine substrate and good filtration. An excellent choice for a Peruvian or Colombian Amazonian community tank.
Water: Soft to moderately hard, pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 22–26°C; wide tolerance makes it beginner-friendly. Tank: 80 L with fine sand, moderate decoration, and good filtration. Feeding: Sinking pellets, algae wafers, frozen bloodworm, and Daphnia; enthusiastic feeder. Breeding: Typical cory spawning; relatively easy with standard cool water change trigger. Compatibility: Excellent for all peaceful community tanks; a robust and adaptable species.
