Parosphromenus deissneri
Also known as: Licorice Gourami, Deissner's Licorice Gourami
Origin: Sumatra, Peninsular Malaysia
The Licorice Gourami genus (Parosphromenus) consists of numerous tiny, critically endangered labyrinth fish from peat swamp forests of Southeast Asia. Parosphromenus deissneri is the most commonly available species, displaying vivid iridescent blue and teal fin edges against a dark brown body. All species are highly threatened in the wild due to habitat loss.
Water: 24–30 °C, pH 3.5–6.5, very soft (GH 0–4); blackwater essential. Tank: 20 L minimum; species-only or with very small peaceful nano fish; driftwood caves. Feeding: Live small invertebrates preferred — Daphnia, micro worms, baby brine shrimp. Behaviour: Peaceful; males court females with cave spawning; best kept as pairs. Compatibility: Species tank strongly recommended; shrimp-safe if water is correct.
