Lithochromis rubripinnis
Also known as: Red-Fin Lithochromis, Rubripinnis Victorian Cichlid
Origin: Lake Victoria, East Africa
Lithochromis rubripinnis is a rarely exported Victorian haplochromine with a strikingly clean colour scheme: a blue-silver body with saturated red unpaired fins creating a bold bicolour effect. It is restricted to rocky shoreline habitats and is not commonly encountered in the hobby, making it a prized find for dedicated Victorian cichlid collectors. The species is endemic to Lake Victoria and is considered at risk due to habitat degradation and introduced predators.
In the aquarium, L. rubripinnis requires all the standard Victorian cichlid accommodations: hard alkaline water, rocky décor, and a harem arrangement. It is among the more aggressive Victorian species and should be kept with care when mixing with others. Advanced aquarists who obtain this species are encouraged to maintain and breed it as a contribution to captive conservation efforts.
Feeding is straightforward with quality cichlid pellets and frozen invertebrates. Spirulina supplementation is recommended to provide plant-based nutrition and support the immune system.
Water: 22-27°C, pH 7.0-8.5, hard alkaline; strict water change schedule required. Tank: 150L minimum; ample rocky territory; minimal open water. Feeding: Cichlid pellets, frozen mysis, brine shrimp, and spirulina supplements. Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder; pairs should be introduced carefully. Compatibility: Advanced Victorian-only tank; do not mix with highly aggressive species.
