Betta livida
Also known as: Livid Betta, Selangor Betta
Origin: Malaysia
Betta livida is one of the most threatened Betta species, classified as Critically Endangered due to severe peat swamp habitat loss in its native Selangor, Malaysia. Males display spectacular blue and green iridescence. As with other peat swamp bettas, it demands very soft, highly acidic water and live foods for successful long-term maintenance.
Water: temp 24–28°C, pH 3.5–6.0, extremely soft blackwater; peat or catappa essential. Tank: minimum 40L species tank; heavily planted, leaf litter, dark substrate. Feeding: carnivore — live micro-foods essential; daphnia, artemia nauplii, micro worms. Behaviour: peaceful; males build small bubble nests; gentle towards females. Compatibility: species-only or with very small, gentle blackwater fish such as Boraras.
