Nimbochromis livingstonii
Also known as: Livingston's Cichlid, Livingstonii Hap, Kaligono
Origin: Lake Malawi, Africa
Nimbochromis livingstonii is famous for its remarkable 'tonic immobility' hunting strategy, lying motionless on its side on the substrate to mimic a dead fish and luring curious prey within striking range. Males develop a dramatic pattern of blue, yellow, and brown blotching. It is a hardy, adaptable species and a must-have for Malawi enthusiasts who appreciate unique behaviour.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 7.5-8.5, hard alkaline with good filtration. Tank: 400L minimum; open sandy floor is essential for its feeding behaviour. Feeding: High-protein foods: pellets, silversides, frozen fish, krill. Behaviour: Uses feigned death to ambush prey; do not keep with smaller fish. Compatibility: Only with large robust haps; remove anything small enough to be eaten.
