Homaloptera orthogoniata
Also known as: Lizard Loach, Dragon Loach
Origin: Southeast Asia
Homaloptera orthogoniata is one of the larger hillstream loaches, with a distinctly elongated, angular body that closely resembles a small lizard when resting on rockwork. Its mottled camouflage is highly effective against natural substrate, and it possesses strongly modified ventral fins that act as suckers in powerful currents. Despite its imposing appearance it is entirely peaceful and rarely bothers tank mates.
Water: 22-26°C, pH 6.5-7.5, strongly oxygenated, moderate to high flow. Tank: Minimum 100 L, large boulders and slate overhangs, moderate current. Feeding: Biofilm and algae grazer; supplement sinking carnivore wafers and worms. Behaviour: Rests motionless for long periods; active at night and in strong current. Compatibility: Peaceful; suitable with medium hillstream community fish.
