Pygopristis denticulata
Also known as: Lobetoothed Piranha, Multicuspid Piranha
Origin: Amazon and Orinoco basins, South America
Pygopristis denticulata is the sole species of its genus and stands apart from true piranhas by possessing multicuspid (multi-pointed) teeth rather than the razor-blade single-cusped dentition of Pygocentrus and Serrasalmus. This dental adaptation reflects a more omnivorous diet that includes aquatic invertebrates, small fish, seeds, and fruits.
It is somewhat less aggressive than the carnivorous piranhas but still requires careful housing management. Small schools of three to five individuals display more natural behaviour than solitary specimens. Its unusual dentition and intermediate feeding ecology make it a fascinating subject for specialist piranha keepers.
Piranha ownership restrictions may apply in some jurisdictions; check locally.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 5.0-7.0, soft to moderately soft; blackwater tannin supplementation appreciated. Tank: Minimum 300L for a small group; provide driftwood and robust plants or silk décor; secure lid essential. Feeding: Omnivore; fish fillet, frozen invertebrates, high-quality pellets, and occasional fruit or seeds; more varied diet than true piranhas. Breeding: Group spawning species; nest-guarding behaviour reported; rarely bred in captivity. Compatibility: Species-only or species-appropriate housing; less aggressive than Pygocentrus but still problematic with most tankmates; check local piranha laws.
