Lobochilotes labiatus
Also known as: Thick-Lipped Cichlid, Labiatus
Origin: Lake Tanganyika, Africa
Lobochilotes labiatus is the largest member of the Tanganyika rocky-shore cichlid community and is immediately recognisable by its extraordinarily thick, fleshy lips used to prise invertebrates from rock crevices. Despite its imposing size, it is a relatively mild-mannered fish in a suitably large aquarium. A rare species that makes a dramatic centrepiece for a large Tanganyika display.
Water: 24-27°C, pH 7.8-9.0, hard alkaline water; excellent filtration essential. Tank: 500L+ minimum; large smooth rock structures; open sand areas for movement. Feeding: Meaty cichlid pellet, frozen krill, Mysis, lance fish; enthusiastic feeder. Behaviour: Relatively peaceful for its size; one specimen or mated pair per tank. Compatibility: Large Frontosa, Cyathopharynx furcifer; avoid small fish that fit in its mouth.
