Lobophyllia hemprichii
Origin: Indo-Pacific, Red Sea
Lobophyllia hemprichii is a large-polyped stony coral forming flattened or mounding colonies with broadly meandering valleys and distinctive fleshy polyps in a rich palette of red, orange, green, and brown. Its substantial flesh gives it an attractive cushioned appearance in display reef aquariums. Moderately aggressive, it extends sweeper tentacles at night to defend its territory from encroaching neighbours.
Place on the substrate or lower rock with moderate water flow and medium to low lighting. Maintain stable alkalinity (8–9 dKH) and calcium (400–450 ppm). Feed meaty foods such as mysis or krill to polyps 1–2 times weekly. Ensure adequate spacing from other corals as sweeper tentacles can extend several inches.
