Lobophyllia hemprichii
Origin: Indo-Pacific, Red Sea
Lobophyllia hemprichii in its red form is a striking open brain coral with vivid crimson-red tissue and deep-valley brain coral patterning. It is moderately aggressive, extending powerful sweeper tentacles at night to defend its territory, but its bold colouration makes it one of the most visually impressive LPS corals for mid-to-low placement in reef aquariums. It is a photosynthetic feeder that benefits greatly from supplemental target feeding.
Low to medium PAR (75–200). Gentle to moderate indirect flow. Alk 8–10 dKH, Ca 400–450 ppm, temp 24–27°C. Target feed with meaty foods placed into the coral's valleys 1–2× weekly — Lobophyllia is an aggressive feeder. Allow 10–15 cm clearance for sweeper tentacles. Place on open sand or low rock ledge. Do not allow sand burial. Hardy once established.
