Pethia conchonius
Also known as: Long-fin Rosy Barb, Veil-tail Rosy Barb
Origin: Captive-bred
The Long-fin Rosy Barb adds dramatically elongated fins to the already attractive Pethia conchonius body plan. Males in breeding condition display the full rosy-red colouration enhanced by trailing fin edges, making this one of the most impressive temperate community fish available.
The elongated fins require non-nippy companions and moderate rather than strong water current. Plants should be robust since Rosy Barbs will sample soft-leaved vegetation. Keep in schools to minimise intra-specific nipping and to see the full schooling display.
This variant is as hardy and adaptable as the standard form and breeds readily, producing a mix of long-fin and short-fin offspring.
Water: 14–22°C, pH 6.0–8.0, GH 4–15; avoid strong current that may stress the long fins. Tank: minimum 100 L, robust plants, open midwater area; no sharp décor. Feeding: omnivore — flake, pellets, colour-enhancing foods, frozen bloodworm and brine shrimp. Breeding: egg-scatterer; long-fin trait partially dominant; spawns over plants or mops. Compatibility: avoid fin-nippers; otherwise a good temperate community fish in groups of 6+.
