Tanichthys albonubes
Also known as: Long-fin White Cloud, Veil-tail White Cloud Mountain Minnow
Origin: Captive-bred (China)
The Long-fin White Cloud retains every virtue of the wild-type species — hardiness, cold tolerance, and a lively schooling nature — while adding dramatically elongated dorsal, caudal, and anal fins that billow as the fish swims. The effect under good lighting is almost otherworldly.
Care requirements are identical to the standard form. The only consideration is tank-mates: avoid nippy fish that may target the long fins. Current should be moderate rather than strong to prevent fin damage.
This variant spawns as readily as the standard form and produces a mix of long-fin and short-fin offspring. A dedicated breeding tank with java moss or spawning mops will yield the best results.
Water: 14–22°C, pH 6.0–8.0, GH 2–15, moderate gentle flow to protect the long fins. Tank: minimum 40 L, well-planted with soft broadleaf plants; avoid sharp décor that could snag fins. Feeding: omnivore — flake, micro-pellets, frozen cyclops, daphnia, and occasional baby brine shrimp. Breeding: egg-scatterer among fine plants or mops; long-fin trait is partially dominant in offspring. Compatibility: peaceful; keep only with non-nippy tank-mates to preserve fin integrity.
