About

The Long-fin Zebra Danio is a selectively bred fin variety of the Zebrafish (Danio rerio) in which the dorsal, caudal, anal, and pelvic fins are greatly elongated, producing a flowing, veil-tail appearance that gives the fish a more graceful and decorative look than the standard short-finned form. The classic blue and silver horizontal stripe pattern of the Zebrafish is retained and, in fact, appears even more striking when displayed across the extended fin surfaces. In terms of care, biology, and behavior, the Long-fin Zebra Danio is essentially identical to standard Danio rerio: it reaches approximately 5 cm, is entirely peaceful, schooling, and exceptionally hardy. It tolerates a wide range of water conditions and accepts all standard foods. The principal consideration specific to the long-finned variety is fin care: its long, flowing fins are attractive targets for fin-nipping species such as Tiger Barbs or other semi-aggressive fish. Tankmate selection must therefore be made carefully. When kept with appropriate companions, the Long-fin Zebra Danio is a beautiful and trouble-free aquarium resident that has been popular with hobbyists since the development of the variety in the mid-twentieth century.

Care Guide

Tank Setup A minimum of 40 liters for a school of six. Long, shallow tanks suit the horizontal swimming style of this species. Use fine gravel or sand substrate with some plants along the aquarium margins to provide visual interest and shelter without blocking swimming space. A well-fitting lid is essential to prevent jumping.

Water Parameters Maintain pH between 6.5 and 7.5. Temperature of 18–25°C is appropriate, and the species tolerates cool conditions well. Soft to moderately hard water is suitable. No strict hardness requirements. Maintain good aeration and gentle to moderate water movement. Perform weekly water changes of 20–25%.

Feeding Undemanding and adaptable. Accepts all standard foods including flake, micro-pellets, and live or frozen foods such as daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworm. Feed two to three times daily in small amounts.

Tankmates Critical consideration: the long fins of this variety are irresistible targets for fin nippers. Avoid Tiger Barbs, other semi-aggressive barbs, and any fish known for fin-nipping. Excellent companions include other long-finned varieties, peaceful tetras, small rasboras, corydoras, and dwarf gouramis.

Health and Maintenance Hardy and generally disease-resistant, but the long fins may suffer damage if tankmates are poorly chosen. Monitor for fin rot, which can follow fin-nipping injuries. Maintain clean water and provide a secure lid.
