Mikrogeophagus ramirezi
Also known as: Long-finned Blue Ram, Veil-tail Ram, Longfin Ram
Origin: South America (Orinoco basin, Colombia and Venezuela)
The Long-finned Blue Ram is a fin morph variant of Mikrogeophagus ramirezi selectively bred to develop significantly elongated dorsal, anal, and caudal fins that billow and trail gracefully as the fish moves through the water. The standard Blue Ram colouration — yellow head, blue-speckled flanks, black markings, and iridescent blue scales — is fully retained and is, if anything, made more dramatic by the extended fin surfaces.
This morph has no natural counterpart and is entirely a product of captive selective breeding. Its fin length can vary considerably between individuals, with the most extreme specimens displaying fins that extend significantly beyond the body length. The elongated fins can make the fish slightly more vulnerable to fin nipping and require tank mates to be chosen with care.
Care requirements for the Long-finned Blue Ram are identical to those of the standard German Blue Ram — warm, soft, clean water is the most important factor. Like all Ram cichlids, it is best suited to intermediate aquarists who can maintain the required water conditions. In a well-planted, peaceful community tank, the Long-finned Blue Ram's flowing fins and vivid colours create a uniquely elegant display. Pairs exhibit the characteristic breeding behaviour of the species, including substrate cleaning and fry guarding.
Tank Setup
Minimum 70 litres. Fine sand substrate with driftwood, rocks, and broad-leafed plants provides ideal conditions. Avoid sharp décor that could tear the elongated fins. Low to moderate current — the extended fins can be strained by strong water movement. Low to moderate lighting.
Water Parameters
Temperature 26–30 °C, pH 5.5–7.5, GH 1–10, KH 0–5. Soft, clean, warm water is paramount. Weekly 20–30% water changes. Keep nitrates below 20 ppm. Fin tears in poor water quality are a common problem.
Feeding
Various micro pellets, granules, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. Feed small amounts two to three times daily. A varied, complete diet maintains immune health and fin condition.
Tank Mates
Only house with peaceful, non-nippy species. Even species that rarely nip in other contexts may target the flowing fins of Long-finned Blue Rams. Small tetras (rummy-nose, cardinal), otocinclus, and corydoras are generally safe. Avoid barbs, danios, and other fin-nippers.
Behaviour
Behaviourally identical to the standard Blue Ram — curious, peaceful outside of breeding season, and territorial when spawning. Males court females with colour displays and fin spreading. The extended finnage makes fin displays particularly impressive. Pairs make attentive parents.
Health
The elongated fins are more susceptible to bacterial fin rot and physical damage. Any fin deterioration should be investigated immediately — it is often an early indicator of poor water quality or stress. Maintain warm, pristine water and quarantine all new fish.
