Plesiotrygon iwamae
Also known as: Long-tailed River Stingray, Amazon Whiptail Stingray
Origin: South America
Plesiotrygon iwamae is a deep-water specialist from the Amazon River main channel, adapted to the strong currents and fine sandy substrates of deep river channels. It is rarely collected and even more rarely available in the hobby, making it a genuine collector's specimen. Its exceptional tail length relative to disc size is unique among the Potamotrygonidae.
Water: 26-30°C, pH 5.5-7.0, very soft, excellent biological and mechanical filtration. Tank: Minimum 900L with very large footprint; sufficient depth to accommodate the exceptional tail length. Feeding: Carnivore; prawns, earthworms, mussel presented on the substrate. Behaviour: Semi-aggressive; venomous long tail spine — handle with extreme caution at all times. Compatibility: Species tank or with large non-substrate fish well clear of the ray's resting zone.
