Pterolebias longipinnis
Also known as: Longfin Killifish, Longfin Pearlfish
Origin: Brazil
Pterolebias longipinnis is a dramatic annual killifish from temporary pools in Brazil. Males develop remarkably long, flowing dorsal and caudal fins that trail elegantly through the water, accompanied by vivid body colouration. The full annual incubation protocol is required, and male aggression toward each other and persistent pursuit of females means careful management is needed.
Water: 22–26 °C, pH 6.0–7.0, soft and slightly acidic. Tank: 40 L tall species tank to accommodate fin display; peat substrate; secure lid. Feeding: Live and frozen Daphnia, Artemia, blood worm; avoids dry foods. Behaviour: Males aggressive toward rivals and persistent with females; single-male setup. Compatibility: Species tank only.
