Brycinus longipinnis
Also known as: Longfin Tetra, Long-finned Characin
Origin: West Africa (Sierra Leone to Congo)
Brycinus longipinnis is a medium-large West African tetra found from Sierra Leone to the Congo basin. Adult males develop strikingly elongated dorsal and anal fins, giving the species its common name. A lively, schooling fish that adds movement and grace to a large West African biotope, it should be kept in groups of at least six.
Water: 23–27°C, pH 6.0–7.5, moderate hardness acceptable. Tank: Minimum 120L; long tank with strong filtration and planting along the edges. Feeding: Larger flakes, pellets, and frozen or live foods including mysis, bloodworm, and brine shrimp. Behaviour: Active midwater schooler; peaceful with most fish but may nip long-finned tankmates. Compatibility: Good with large cichlids that won't eat it and other robust West African community fish.
