Danio rerio var. (longfin)
Also known as: Longfin Zebra Danio, Veiltail Zebrafish
Origin: South Asia (captive-bred)
The Longfin Zebra Danio is a captive-bred variant of Danio rerio in which a fin-extension mutation produces greatly elongated dorsal, caudal, and anal fins. These extended fins create an elegant, butterfly-like appearance as the fish moves. While hardiness remains exceptional, slightly calmer water flow is preferable to prevent fin damage, and fin-nipping tankmates must be avoided.
Water: 18–26°C, pH 6.5–7.5, wide hardness tolerance (GH 5–20). Tank: 60 L minimum; gentle to moderate current to protect extended fins. Feeding: Omnivore; flake, micro-pellets, frozen brine shrimp and daphnia. Behaviour: Peaceful active schooler; keep in groups of 8+. Compatibility: Avoid fin-nippers (Tiger Barbs, etc.); ideal with corydoras, small rasboras, and peaceful tetras.
