Lactoria cornuta
Origin: Indo-Pacific
Lactoria cornuta — the longhorn cowfish — is a distinctive curiosity with a rigid box-shaped body and long horn-like projections above its eyes. It is an omnivore that picks at substrate looking for small invertebrates. The cowfish can release a toxic mucus (ostracitoxin) when severely stressed, which can kill tankmates and even itself in an enclosed system. FOWLR tanks only; not reef-safe. Best kept alone or with very peaceful, robust tankmates.
FOWLR only. WARNING: Releases toxins when severely stressed — avoid shipping with others. Feed: meaty foods, mysis. Slow swimmer — do not keep with boisterous fish.
