Oxycirrhites typus
Origin: Indo-Pacific, Red Sea, Eastern Pacific
The Longnose Hawkfish (Oxycirrhites typus) is instantly recognizable by its elongated snout and striking red and white grid patterning. Found in deep-water sea fans and black coral throughout the Indo-Pacific, it is a prized and distinctive species in the marine hobby. Provide gorgonians or sea fans to mimic its natural habitat.
House in a reef or FOWLR aquarium of at least 150 L with gorgonians or sea fans for perching. Feed frozen mysis, shrimp, and meaty marine foods. Perches motionlessly for hours then darts at prey. May eat small shrimp and ornamental invertebrates. Peaceful with most fish but territorial toward other hawkfish.
