Toxotes lorentzi
Also known as: Lorentz's Archerfish, New Guinea Archerfish
Origin: New Guinea
Toxotes lorentzi is a smaller and more slender archerfish endemic to the rivers of New Guinea. It is less frequently seen in the trade than T. jaculatrix or T. chatareus, making it a highly desirable species for archerfish enthusiasts. It inhabits freshwater rivers more than true brackish habitats but benefits from slightly hard, alkaline water.
Water: 24–28 °C, pH 7.5–8.5, specific gravity 1.002–1.008; tolerates near-freshwater conditions. Tank: 250 L minimum; leave a generous air gap of at least 15 cm above water. Feeding: Carnivorous; crickets, mealworms, floating pellets, and frozen foods. Behaviour: Slightly less aggressive than larger species; keep in groups of 3–5 for best results. Compatibility: Medium-sized brackish or hard freshwater fish; avoid very small species.
