Nothobranchius lourensi
Also known as: Lourenso's Nothobranch, Lourensi Killifish
Origin: Coastal Mozambique
Nothobranchius lourensi is an annual killifish from coastal Mozambique, inhabiting short-lived seasonal pools that form during the rainy season. Males display deep red body colouration with metallic blue scale edging producing a vivid reticulated effect, while the caudal fin typically shows contrasting banding. The species is uncommon in the hobby but appreciated by specialists for its bold colouration.
Like other coastal Mozambican Nothobranchius, N. lourensi thrives in soft, warm water. A peat substrate is essential to trigger natural egg-burying behaviour. After collection, eggs should be stored in slightly moist peat for 8–10 weeks before being re-wetted to induce hatching. Fry are robust and grow quickly on a diet of micro-foods and Artemia nauplii.
For killifish enthusiasts looking to expand beyond the most commonly kept species, N. lourensi offers spectacular colouration alongside relatively uncomplicated husbandry.
Water: 20–26 °C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft water preferred (GH 2–8). Tank: 30–40 L species tank with peat or fine sand substrate and a secure lid. Feeding: Live or frozen Artemia, Daphnia, bloodworm, and micro worms daily. Breeding: Collect peat monthly; store eggs 8–10 weeks in slightly moist peat. Compatibility: Keep as a species; multiple males require separation.
