Myloplus lucienae
Also known as: Luciene's Myloplus, Luciene's Pacu
Origin: Brazil, South America
Myloplus lucienae is one of the more recently formally described Myloplus species, reflecting the ongoing taxonomic revision of the serrasalmid family. It is native to Brazilian river systems and is characterised by a silver body with distinct fin colouration that helps separate it from closely related congeners. As a relatively newly named species it remains rarely exported and is a genuine collector's specimen for the specialist pacu enthusiast.
Care follows the standard Myloplus template: large aquarium (800+ litres), excellent filtration, soft to moderately hard warm water, and a primarily plant-based diet. It will consume soft aquatic vegetation and should be housed in a robust, mostly artificial environment. Like its relatives it is a strong swimmer and appreciates open water lanes and good flow.
Myloplus lucienae is a peaceful species compatible with other large, non-aggressive fish. Its rarity in the hobby means it commands a premium price and is typically only available through specialist importers. When available, it represents an exciting addition to a dedicated large South American pacu display.
Water: Soft to moderately hard, pH 5.5–7.5, 24–28°C; high filtration and frequent water changes. Tank: 800 L minimum; open swimming lanes; robust hardscape and artificial plants. Feeding: Plant-based diet supplemented with herbivore pellets; fresh vegetables and fruit. Breeding: No captive breeding records documented. Compatibility: Peaceful with large non-aggressive SA fish.
