Nothobranchius lucius
Also known as: Lucius Nothobranch, Ethiopian Killifish
Origin: Rift Valley, Ethiopia
Nothobranchius lucius is an annual killifish from Ethiopia, inhabiting short-lived seasonal pools in the semi-arid Rift Valley region. Unlike many of its flamboyant relatives, N. lucius males are more subdued in colouration — displaying warm orange-brown tones with subtle red spotting — but this understated elegance is appreciated by collectors seeking variety beyond the typical vivid mosaics.
The species requires slightly warmer and harder water than many other Nothobranchius, reflecting its Rift Valley origin. A peat substrate is necessary for spawning, and eggs undergo a diapause of 10–14 weeks before re-wetting. The species is moderately hardy for an annual killifish and makes an interesting project for the intermediate to advanced keeper.
N. lucius is rarely seen in the mainstream trade and is typically available only through specialist killifish societies and dedicated breeders. Its unusual colouration and biogeographic interest make it a worthy addition to any killifish collection.
Water: 20–25 °C, pH 6.5–7.5, moderately soft to slightly hard (GH 4–12). Tank: 30 L species tank with peat substrate; keep lighting subdued. Feeding: Live Artemia, Daphnia, mosquito larvae, and frozen bloodworm daily. Breeding: Harvest peat and store eggs dry for 10–14 weeks before re-wetting. Compatibility: Species tank only; males are highly intolerant of each other.
