Metynnis luna
Also known as: Luna Silver Dollar, Madeira Silver Dollar
Origin: Rio Madeira, Brazil
Metynnis luna hails from the Rio Madeira drainage of Brazil and displays a clean, pale silver body with subtly reddish dorsal fin margins that deepen in well-conditioned specimens. Its slightly more streamlined body compared to M. hypsauchen gives it an elegant, torpedo-disc hybrid appearance.
Care follows the standard Metynnis template: herbivorous diet, soft acidic to neutral water, and group housing in 200L or larger aquaria. The Madeira drainage origin means it strongly benefits from slightly acidic, soft water for optimal health and colouration.
Not subject to piranha restrictions.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 5.5-7.0, soft water preferred (2-10 dGH); Madeira drainage origin means neutral-to-acidic conditions best. Tank: Minimum 200L; school of 6; open mid-water space; driftwood provides visual depth without obstructing movement. Feeding: Herbivore; spirulina flake, blanched spinach, courgette, peas; offer variety to maintain red fin colouration. Breeding: Egg-scatterer; occasional captive spawning reported in large, mature setups. Compatibility: Peaceful; excellent community fish for large softwater setups.
