Lagocephalus lunaris
Also known as: Lunar Puffer, Lunartail Puffer
Origin: Indo-Pacific (coastal and open water)
Lagocephalus lunaris is a fast-swimming, open-water puffer found across the Indo-Pacific and occasionally entering Red Sea and Mediterranean waters. Unlike most aquarium puffers, it is an active pelagic species rather than a benthic ambush predator, requiring substantial space for free swimming. It is occasionally available in the specialist trade and is considered highly toxic.
Water: 24–28°C, pH 8.1–8.4, SG 1.020–1.025; full marine salinity with strong flow. Tank: Minimum 400 L; open swimming space with minimal decor and strong circulation. Feeding: Whole fish, prawns, clams, and frozen marine foods; active feeder requiring daily meals. Behaviour: Fast, active swimmer; aggressive feeder — species-only marine aquarium. Compatibility: Species-only; fast open-water fish — avoid reef systems.
