Aphyosemion australe
Also known as: Lyretail Killifish, Cape Lopez Lyretail
Origin: Cameroon, Gabon
Aphyosemion australe is one of the most widely kept killifish in the hobby, originating from the forest streams of Cameroon and Gabon. Males display warm chocolate-brown and orange colouration with a distinctive lyre-shaped caudal extension. Unlike Nothobranchius, it is a non-annual species that lives several years in captivity.
Water: 22–26°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard. Tank: 40L minimum, densely planted, mops or peat for spawning, tight lid. Feeding: Carnivore — live/frozen daphnia, bloodworm, artemia; micro-pellets accepted. Behaviour: Males occasionally quarrel; generally peaceful with other species. Compatibility: Good with small peaceful community fish; avoid boisterous tankmates.
