Scleromystax macropterus
Origin: Brazil (Parana-Paraguay drainage)
Scleromystax macropterus is a robust, long-finned armored catfish endemic to fast-flowing, cool rivers in the Parana-Paraguay drainage of Brazil. Males are especially impressive with extended dorsal and pectoral fin rays. Like other Scleromystax species, it requires cooler temperatures and high oxygen levels to thrive.
Keep in a well-oxygenated aquarium of at least 120 L with cool flowing water (18–23°C). Provide a fine sandy substrate and some hiding spots. Feed sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, and blanched vegetables. Males can be territorial toward each other but generally peaceful. Avoid warm tropical conditions.
