Crenicichla macrostigma
Also known as: Macrostigma Pike Cichlid, Large-spot Pike Cichlid, Tocantins Ocellated Pike
Origin: Rio Tocantins drainage, Brazil
Crenicichla macrostigma is a visually arresting pike cichlid from the Rio Tocantins drainage, its scientific name translating as 'large spot' — perfectly describing the outsized ocellated marking at the mid-flank that dominates the fish's appearance. The spot is encircled by a ring of metallic iridescent scales that flash blue-green under directional lighting, making it one of the more decorative mid-sized Crenicichla.
In the wild this species inhabits the sandy and rocky middle reaches of Tocantins tributaries, living a largely secretive life among submerged wood and rocky shelters. The aquarium should reflect this — fine white sand, smooth stones, driftwood caves, and soft slightly acidic water. Water movement at a gentle level is appreciated but not essential.
At 22 cm C. macrostigma is a manageable size for a dedicated 220 L species tank. It feeds readily on frozen carnivore foods and has been bred in captivity by European Crenicichla specialists. The species is occasionally available through specialist importers and is well worth seeking out for the beauty of its unique lateral marking.
Water: Soft, slightly acidic (pH 5.5–7.0) at 24–28°C; tannin additions beneficial. Tank: 220 L with fine sand, smooth stones, driftwood caves; subdued lighting to show iridescence. Feeding: Frozen prawn, bloodworm, mussel; quality cichlid pellets accepted after settling. Breeding: Cave spawner; standard Crenicichla protocol; condition with live/frozen variety. Compatibility: Species pair; no small fish; a focused species project.
