Tyrannochromis macrostoma
Also known as: Macrostoma Cichlid, Large-mouthed Tyrant
Origin: Lake Malawi, Africa
Tyrannochromis macrostoma is one of the most formidable predatory cichlids in Lake Malawi, possessing an enormous mouth relative to its body size. Its name directly translates to 'large-mouthed tyrant fish', and it can engulf very large prey items. Adults develop attractive blue and black banding and are impressive in appearance, but require enormous tanks and fish-only setups.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 7.5-8.5, hard alkaline; powerful filtration essential. Tank: 500L absolute minimum; this species grows to 35cm and is highly active. Feeding: Large frozen fish, silversides, whole prawns; avoid regular feeder fish. Behaviour: Apex predator; will consume any fish it can catch regardless of size. Compatibility: Species-only or with equally large and robust predatory cichlids only.
