Leptobarbus hoevenii
Also known as: Mad Barb, Hoven's Carp
Origin: Southeast Asia
Leptobarbus hoevenii is a large cyprinid from the rivers of Southeast Asia, where it undertakes seasonal migrations and can grow to over 30 cm. In the aquarium it is known for its energetic, seemingly frenzied swimming behaviour — hence the 'Mad' moniker. Juveniles display attractive reddish finnage that may fade with maturity; it is a fish best reserved for very large aquaria or outdoor ponds where its active nature can be fully appreciated.
Water: 22–28 °C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard (GH 4–15). Tank: 300 L minimum; very large open water, strong filtration, tight cover. Feeding: Omnivore — large pellets, sticks, live/frozen invertebrates, fruit and vegetable matter. Behaviour: Extremely active schooler; keep 4+ and provide ample swimming room. Compatibility: Peaceful but fast and boisterous; can stress or outcompete slower tankmates.
