Pachypanchax omalonotus
Also known as: Madagascar Killifish, Omalonotus Killifish
Origin: Madagascar
Pachypanchax omalonotus is a non-annual killifish found in rivers and streams of Madagascar. It is considerably rarer in the hobby than Playfair's Panchax and is notable for its rows of red-orange spots on a greenish silver body. As a species under pressure in the wild from habitat destruction, captive propagation by dedicated keepers is especially valuable. Its larger size and assertive temperament mean it needs careful management.
Water: 20–26 °C, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard. Tank: 60 L species tank; floating plants; very secure lid essential. Feeding: Live and frozen invertebrates; insects, Artemia, Daphnia; dried food accepted. Behaviour: Males territorial and may be aggressive to females; keep trio with hiding spots. Compatibility: Species tank only; predatory toward small fish.
