Potamotrygon magdalenae
Also known as: Magdalena River Stingray, Colombian Freshwater Ray
Origin: Magdalena & Sinú river basins, Colombia
Potamotrygon magdalenae is restricted to the Magdalena and Sinú river basins of Colombia, draining into the Caribbean rather than the Atlantic via the Amazon or Orinoco. This makes it biologically distinct from most other potamotrygonids and slightly more tolerant of elevated hardness. Its disc is brownish with small pale ocelli and moderate dark patterning. In captivity it adapts reasonably well to slightly harder, more neutral water than most of its relatives, though soft conditions are still preferred for optimal health. It has been maintained and bred in Colombian research facilities. Its relatively moderate water requirements make it a slightly more accessible starting point for keepers in areas with naturally harder tap water.
Water: 22–28°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderate hardness acceptable (2–12 dGH); zero ammonia/nitrite. Tank: Minimum 450L, fine sand substrate, broad open base, efficient filtration; neutral to slightly acidic water ideal. Feeding: Carnivore; earthworms, frozen prawn, mussel, bloodworm; will accept sinking pellets once settled. Breeding: Viviparous; litters of 3–8 pups; bred in captivity in research settings. Compatibility: Large, peaceful fish companions suitable; avoid aggressive cichlids or fin-nippers.
