Betta mahachaiensis
Also known as: Mahachai Betta
Origin: Thailand
Betta mahachaiensis was only described in 2012 and inhabits mangrove swamps and nipa palm stands near Mahachai, Thailand, where water is often slightly brackish. Males are stunning with metallic blue-green body scaling and bold dark facial markings. Their unique habitat requirements make them a speciality for advanced keepers.
Water: 24–28°C, pH 6.5–8.0, moderate hardness (8–15 GH); a tiny pinch of marine salt optional. Tank: 40L minimum, lid essential, robust plants tolerant of harder water (java fern, anubias). Feeding: Live/frozen invertebrates; quality pellets accepted. Behaviour: Males aggressive toward each other and occasionally other bettas. Compatibility: Keep singly or as a pair; avoid soft-water species.
