Tometes makue
Also known as: Makue Tometes, Guiana Tometes
Origin: Guiana Shield rivers, South America
Tometes makue is restricted to the rocky, high-gradient rivers of the Guiana Shield, where it specialises in scraping attached algae and aquatic plants from exposed rock surfaces. It was formally described relatively recently and remains extraordinarily rare in trade, occasionally appearing from Brazilian exporters.
Its rapids-dwelling origin means it demands exceptional water quality, high oxygen levels, and strong water movement. In return, it offers an unparalleled conservation talking point and an unusual body form with a more pointed snout than typical pacus. Strict adherence to ethical acquisition practices is essential given its rarity.
Not subject to piranha restrictions but export may be regulated.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 5.5-7.0, soft water; very high flow and dissolved oxygen are non-negotiable for this rapids specialist. Tank: Minimum 1000L; powerful circulation pump or sump; smooth river rocks and minimal fine sediment; tight-fitting lid. Feeding: Herbivore; algae wafers, spirulina pellets, blanched vegetables, and biofilm-rich rocks introduced from established tanks. Breeding: No captive breeding records; extreme rarity means attempts are inadvisable without expert oversight. Compatibility: Peaceful with similarly sized fish; acquisition must be through verified legal export channels from Brazil.
