Devario malabaricus
Also known as: Malabar Danio, Giant Danio
Origin: India
Devario malabaricus, the Malabar Danio or Giant Danio (a name it shares with the closely related D. aequipinnatus), is a large and impressive danionid from the rivers of the Western Ghats and coastal southwest India. It sports bold blue and silver horizontal stripes on a deeper body than most danios, and in peak condition the blue takes on a brilliant iridescent intensity.
Reaching up to 10 cm in the aquarium, this species requires more space than the typical nano danio, but rewards the keeper with a striking, active school that fills the mid-water of a larger planted community tank. It is extremely hardy and adaptable, tolerating cooler temperatures and a wide pH range without issue.
The Malabar Danio is an ideal centrepiece schooling fish for a medium-to-large community aquarium housing similarly robust species such as larger barbs, medium loaches, and peaceful cichlids.
Water: Temperature 20–26°C, pH 6.5–7.5, GH 5–20; tolerant of most tap-water conditions; strong filtration and regular water changes recommended. Tank: Minimum 120 L; open swimming space critical; robust planting and driftwood décor; strong flow appreciated. Feeding: Omnivorous; pellets, flake, and all frozen foods taken eagerly; vegetable matter and live foods enhance condition. Breeding: Egg-scatterer; follows standard devario breeding protocol; rarely bred in captivity in typical aquarium conditions. Compatibility: Peaceful with robust community fish; avoid housing with very small fish that may be intimidated or accidentally eaten.
