Nothobranchius malaissei
Also known as: Malaisse's Nothobranch, Congo Killifish
Origin: Democratic Republic of Congo
Nothobranchius malaissei is an annual killifish from seasonal pools in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Males display rich red and turquoise scale patterning with vividly marked fins, representing one of the more colourful Nothobranchius from the Congo basin. The species is uncommon in the hobby and is primarily kept by specialist collectors who appreciate the genus.
Care requirements align with other medium-sized Nothobranchius: soft, slightly acidic water, a peat substrate for spawning, and a diet of live and frozen invertebrates. Eggs require a diapause of approximately 8–12 weeks. Males are highly territorial and should be housed individually with a small group of females in a dedicated species tank.
N. malaissei represents an opportunity to keep a genuinely uncommon annual killifish from an underrepresented geographic area. Its striking colouration makes it well worth the effort of sourcing from specialist suppliers.
Water: 22–26 °C, pH 6.0–7.0, soft water (GH 2–8) recommended. Tank: 40 L species tank with peat substrate; dark substrate and background preferred. Feeding: Live Artemia, Daphnia, micro worms, and frozen bloodworm fed daily. Breeding: Harvest peat substrate monthly; store eggs in moist peat 8–12 weeks. Compatibility: Species tank only; male–male aggression can be severe.
