Dimidiochromis compressiceps
Also known as: Malawi Eye-biter, Eye-biter Cichlid
Origin: Lake Malawi, Africa
Dimidiochromis compressiceps is a highly laterally compressed haplochromine adapted to hunting in reed beds and vegetated margins of Lake Malawi. Its narrow profile allows it to ambush prey with a sudden sideways snap, often targeting the eyes of other fish. Males develop attractive blue colouration with red highlights; it requires a species-appropriate setup with no small tank mates.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 7.5-8.5, hard alkaline water. Tank: 400L minimum; can include some plant décor unlike most Malawi species. Feeding: Larger frozen fish, silversides, krill; predatory species requiring meaty diet. Behaviour: Large apex predator; will eat any fish it can fit in its mouth. Compatibility: Species-only or with very large cichlids only; not for community tanks.
